Sally Whitman Coleman, PhD, produces accurate and detailed appraisal of personal property, focusing on fine art. She specializes in Post-War, Contemporary Art, and Emerging Art as well as Western Art.

All appraisals are prepared in accordance with the current Uniform Standards for Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP), which are the professional appraisal practice standards and guidelines as determined by The Appraisal Foundation in Washington, DC.

Sally is an Accredited Member of the Appraisers Association of America. She works independently and objectively, and is not affiliated with any gallery, museum, auction house, or private dealer.

Sally has the utmost consideration for clients’ confidentiality and trust.

Experience

Sally is an art historian and personal property appraiser. She earned a PhD in art history at the University of Texas at Austin and has been teaching art history at universities in central Texas for more than 25 years. Her undergraduate degree is from Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY. She is the recipient of several academic grants and awards, including Phi Beta Kappa and a Fulbright Grant. She has presented numerous papers and invited lectures and has published scholarly and popular essays on art.

Sally has worked at many art institutions, including the Blanton Museum of Art, Austin, TX; Decordova Museum and Sculpture Park in Lincoln, MA; The Springfield Museum of Fine Arts, Springfield, MA; and J. Cacciola Galleries in New York City. She currently is on the National Advisory Council of the Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY. 

Sally completed the Certificate of Professional Appraisal Studies at New York University and is USPAP compliant through May 2024. She is an Accredited Member of the Appraisers Association of America and regularly attends conferences and takes courses for professional appraisers.

Sally also is the author and creator of The Art Minute (www.the-art-minute.com), a blog for people who are new to the history of art.
